From the mid-1950s, passenger train wagon series, which are referred to as conversion wagons, were created through the conversion of state railway compartment wagons on the German Federal Railroad. Second class carriages, first and second class carriages and second class carriages with a luggage compartment were produced.
For many years they were indispensable in local transport on main and branch lines. The last examples were only retired in the mid-1980s, but they are still in use today on museum railways or as construction vehicles.
In the prototype, the electrical equipment of the 3yg(e) wagons only allowed one pair to be formed that were closely coupled to one another, although the choice of wagon was free, so that all possible combinations except BD3yg + BD3yg were possible.
