The 86 series was designed as a 1'D1' standard tender locomotive by the German Reichsbahn Company (DRG) and built in large numbers from 1928 onwards. 244 locomotives remained in the area of what later became the GDR, 71 of which had to be handed over to the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the 1950s, the DR had 164 locomotives at its disposal. The machines were mainly used on the routes in the Harz foothills, in the Ore Mountains and in Upper Lusatia.
