The locomotives could haul trains with a total load of 1,200 t, or 600 t on steep ramps. The steam locomotives, known as "Jumbo" because of their tractive power, were used with great success in almost all of Germany and in many other European countries. The maximum speed forward was 80 km/h, and they could travel at 50 km/h in reverse. From 1937 onwards, the locomotives were mainly ordered with welded tenders, but were immediately exchanged for older riveted tenders from express train locomotives.
