At the beginning of the 1980s, advancements in the electrification of the DR network necessitated the development of a four-axle electric locomotive. The class 243 is a general-purpose electric locomotive of the railway company of the German Democratic Republic, developed from test locomotive 212 001-2, which is used in all train operating areas. The DR purchased over 600 of them.
