As successors to the legendary crocodiles, the SBB purchased a larger series of Ae 6/6 locomotives as universal locomotives for the Gotthard from 1952. Each locomotive bore the coat of arms of a canton, a cantonal capital or a larger Swiss city. It was therefore called a "coat of arms locomotive".
