Prototype

In 2019, Siemens Mobility presented a dual power locomotive known as the Vectron Dual Mode that has both electric and diesel propulsion. The Vectron Dual Mode can be used in a more flexible and resource-saving way by not being dependant on the pre- sence of catanery. By reducing the size of the diesel tank, space was made available for the main transformer. Siemens offers the locomotives in two variants: the Vectron Dual Mode, known in Germany as the BR 248, and the Vectron Dual Mode light, known as the BR 249. While the BR 248 is equipped with an MTU diesel engine and has a 22.5 ton axle load, the BR 249 uses a smaller engine from Cummins and has a 21 ton axle load. In 2020, DB Cargo concluded a framework agreement for up to 400 Dual Mode units, which will be used to upgrade it’s locomotive fleet. At present, 150 locomotives have been delivered.

Model

Broad side panels and large intake screens along with a rooftop pantograph leave no doubt you are looking at the Vectron Dual Mode. The all-new PIKO 1:87 model pays tribute to this modern locomotive. In the development of tooling for the model, great emphasis was placed on details like the ventilation grilles and truck sideframes. Operationally the model continues in the tradition of proven PIKO designs. A dual flywheel-equipped can motor powers all four axles. Diagonally-mounted traction tires help the Dual Mode to pull long trains on your layout. In digital operation, the cab lighting can be activated along with illuminated engineer’s control desks. The XP version features a pulsated smoke generator, and for the first time ever on a PIKO model; a digitally-activated pantograph that can be raised and lowered.
