This type of steam locomotive was the most powerful tender locomotive ever purchased by the German Reichsbahn Company. A total of 45 of these gigantic machines were built. It was nicknamed the "Mountain Queen" because it was mainly used on the Sonneberg-Probstzella railway lines, the Spessartrampe, the Frankenwaldbahn, the Geislinger Steige, the Schiefen Ebene and the Rübelandbahn. After the Second World War, 31 locomotives of the series went to the German Reichsbahn. In the 1950s, boiler equipment, fittings, pumps, driver's cab, etc. were adapted to the DR's practices during maintenance and thus largely standardized. Between 1966 and 1972, 24 machines were converted to oil-fired mains, and 10 locomotives were given a new boiler without a feed dome. The Eisfeld-Sonneberg railway line was the last area of operation. The last machines were not decommissioned until 1981.
