From the end of the 1920s until the 1960s, these coaches shaped the image of express and fast trains – the standard express train coaches built from 1928 and of the German State Railway Company (DRG). Most of these coaches joined the German Federal Railways fleet after 1949. During the class reform in 1956, the second class was renamed the “first class”. Downgrading of the first class coaches began in the 1960s as they were no longer able to cater for increased comfort requirement standards.
