Von 1928 bis 1943 lieferten fast alle deutschen Lokomotivfabriken insgesamt 775 Maschinen dieser Baureihe an die Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft. Konstruktiv waren die 1000-PS-Loks für eine Geschwindigkeit von 70-80 km/h ausgelegt, womit sie neben ihrem Haupteinsatzgebiet der „Nebenbahn" auch auf Haupt- und Zulaufstrecken einsetzbar waren.
