Large-scale operation

The freight train series E 40 (from 1968: 140) is the most frequently built of the DB standard electric locomotives and 879 examples were put into service between 1957 and 1973. The first series to be put into service was the 140 024, which, like many others, changed its appearance considerably over the course of its life through a number of modifications. The simple lower headlights were replaced by double headlights, the Schweiger-type fans gave way to rectangular Klatte-type fans, the surrounding roof gutter disappeared and instead rubber strips were installed over the doors and front windows. In addition, the initially present handle bars and pillar strips running around the front sides were removed and replaced with a simple handle.
