At one time, the Deutsche Bahn operated a great many Prussian-type express train Coach es. They were indispensable in the years after the Second World War, when there were express trains that consisted solely of old Prussian-type Coach es. These Coach es were modified to satisfy the new requirements. They were fitted with electrical systems and the steps underneath the windows were removed.
The Coach es remained in service when the new passenger class system was introduced in 1956. All the former AB and B Coach es were used as first-class Coach es and the former C Coach es were redesignated as second-class Coach es. They did not disappear from the railways until the Deutsche Bahn implemented its conversion programme. However, their bogies, buffers and several other parts remained in use in the converted vehicles.
