As a result of the nationalisation of some private railways, some of the locomotives from the earlier Prussian T 8 class also re-entered the inventory of the former German Reich Railways (DRB). Even before the end of the war, some of them were sold on to works railways and other private railways. However, the 89 1004 that was previously used at the former Mecklenburg Friedrich Wilhelm Railway (MFWE) remained part of the inventory of the German Reich Railways. After 1945, it was in the territory of the Soviet Occupation Zone and remained in service until 1964. The survival of this machine was secured by the first decree from the Minister of Transport regarding the preservation of steam locomotives. For many years, it was in operational use as a museum locomotive and also served as a steam provider in order to heat the 18 201 in Hall P.
