Information about the model
In order to be able to meet the ever-growing transport needs in the emerging Federal Republic, the German Federal Railway also endeavoured to replace the various types of pre-war wagons as quickly as possible. Open freight wagons were needed in large numbers for the transport of coal, among other things. For this reason, the DB, together with the Uerdingen wagon factory, developed a two-axle open wagon with a 5.40 m wheelbase by 1952.
A total of 14,919 Omm52s were built and delivered to the Federal Railway by 1962. The wagons had a frame made of welded hollow box sections with welded head pieces. The running gear was already designed according to UIC guidelines with a suspension with double spring hooks. Initially, the wagons were delivered with a Hildebrandt-Knorr freight train brake, later series with the more modern Knorr standard brake. Some of the cars had a handbrake, with the brakeman's platform bolted to the solebar on one side, giving the cars an asymmetrical chassis with different overhangs.
The first deliveries of vehicles with a handbrake still had a sheet metal brakeman's cab. Some of the cars were pure cable cars from the factory and had no braking system. The body of the cars was also welded and had doors on the sides and movable head flaps on the front, which enabled unloading via tipping systems. Cars with a handbrake, on the other hand, had a fixed front wall on the handbrake side. Almost all Omm52 were included in the EUROP park and could therefore be used freely by member railways.
