The BB 22200 is a french electric locomotive series which can be used on the DC (1,5 kV) network as well as the AC network (25 kV 50 Hz) of the SNCF. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" ("broken nose") comes from the hand of Frenchman Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time.

Prototype Information
Built on the same platform, the series BB 22200 was built for use both on the direct-current network, which was electrified with 1.5 kV, and also on the SNCF alternating-current network, which was electrified with 25 kV 50 Hz. In the years 1976 to 1986, a total of 205 locomotives were delivered in six series. Due to the multi-system capability and the design as a general-purpose locomotive, the BB 22200 is used on almost all standard-gauge electrified routes in France to haul freight and passenger trains.
From 2006 onwards. several locomotives were retrofitted with a reversing train control in order to haul shuttle trains. The locomotives supplied with “Béton” colouration became increasingly colourful over time. From 1996, several locomotives were painted in the “Corail +” and “Multiservices” colours over the course of repair work. When the SNCF was split into different business units from the year 2000, comprehensive repainting work was carried out. In the freight business unit, the locomotives received their green “Fret” colouration (jade green, white and two shades of grey). The long-distance locomotives were provided with the “En voyage” or “Fantôme” liveries. The engines used in regional traffic (TER) were given regional colourations, and those assigned to the SNCF Infra were painted yellow with a red longitudinal strip underneath the roof edge.
