Diesel locomotive 228 751 of the Deutsche Bahn.

■ 6-axle design with single banderole
■ Stationed at the Meiningen depot
■ Switchable tail light with DIP switch

The decline in traffic on the railway company of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Reichsbahn) caused many locomotives to be put out of service. Of these, the previously-essential class 118 locomotives were most affected. In the years before, the increasing electrification of the DR had also caused a decline in the number of 118s in service. However, some V 180 locomotives, renamed as the class 228 on 1st January 1992, were operated on the steep lines in Thuringia for a prolonged period of time. A few class 228.6-8 locomotives were still maintained by DB AG until 1998.
