Piko 55926 - Steam Locomotive (Sound) BR 62 DR III
Steam Locomotive (Sound) BR 62 DR III, PIKO Sound-Decoder
Prototype
The BR 62 was the result of efforts by the Reichsbahn Central Office to develop a series of multipurpose standard locomotives. Based on the BR 20 (which was never built), engineers de- signed a fast two-cylinder superheated steam locomotive with a 4-6-4T wheel arrangement. A contract to build the engines was awarded to the Henschel company, who in 1928 completed fifteen locomotives. Initially, the DRG took delivery of just 62 001 and 62 002 and used them in the Ruhr area. The remaining 13 engines were not put into service until 1932.
Soon after, they found their natural home on the demanding Werra Railroad between Eisenach and Lichtenfels. Following the Second World War, seven engines remained in the western zones while eight remained in the East. The Deutsche Bundesbahn restored it’s BR 62s to operational condition in 1949 and used them in commuter service in the Ruhr area until 1956. In 1972, engine 62 1007-4 was the last of its kind to retire from scheduled service. Today 62 015 can be seen as a museum locomotive in Dresden.
Model
The crystal-clear window inserts of the driver's cab and the unobstructed interior allow a clear view of the detailed boiler and driver's cab rear wall. The die-cast zinc and metal parts give the model a very high weight, which in combination with the finely tuned motor with flywheels ensures optimal driving characteristics. Using the factory-installed PSD XP sound decoder, the lighting of the engine and the driver's cab as well as the flickering in the firebox can be switched digitally. The Expert Plus model also has digitally switchable coupleres and a pulsed evaporator that is controlled synchronously with the wheel.
