On January 24, 1905, electric operation began on the 23.7 km long track to the Ammer Valley. It was the first journey of an electric train under a simple AC overhead line. This made it the first route to be equipped with a new system, the "railway current" that is still in use in Central and Northern Europe today.
The route was initially operated by electric railcars, and later by small electric locomotives capable of speeds of up to 50 km/h. The energy in the form of single-phase alternating current came from the Kammerl hydroelectric power station on the Ammer. From 1930, the beefy LAG 5 - later 169 005 - reinforced the electric locomotive fleet on the Oberammergau Railway. Despite its length of only 8.7 m, the small powerhouse proved to be excellent.
For decades, the railway, with its coziness and idyllic surroundings of a Bavarian local railway, exerted a special appeal for all railway enthusiasts. The time of the "Neinasechzga" in local transport on the Oberammergau Railway came to an end in May 1981. With the withdrawal of the old locomotives, regular service took hold, and the charm of an incomparable era was irretrievably gone.
