The class 50, probably the most important DB steam locomotive of the 1950/60s with many design variants, had proven itself in front of almost all types of trains on main and branch lines at that time. In the end, more than 60 major variants ensured that hardly any 50 version had a completely identical appearance to a sister locomotive. The 1’E freight locomotives, around 3,100 units of which were built from 1939 onwards, were considered sturdy, powerful, easy to maintain and extremely reliable. After 1945, over 2,000 locomotives remained with the German Federal Railways. These machines achieve a maximum speed of 80 km/h, could produce an output of 1,200 kW and had and had an axle load of 15 t.
When the EDP class schedule was introduced in 1968, there were still 1,452 machines in the inventory of the DB. Since the serial number was only allowed to have three digits, the designations 051, 052 and 053 were introduced in addition to class number 050.
