The German Reichsbahn feared that due to the partially poor condition of the 01 series, it would be able to keep fewer and fewer locomotives for the express trains. It was therefore decided to reconstruct the 01, which for the Reichsbahn also meant an increase in performance and the elimination of errors and this was particularly successful with this series. The new welded boiler was given a third safety valve. All boiler structures were covered, the driver's cab was modernized and the Witte smoke deflectors were beveled at the front.
The "01 529" was equipped with a combustion chamber boiler, mixing preheater and oil main firing in 1964. Her last place of work was Berlin-Schöneweide. She was decommissioned in July 1983.
