■ Typical freight train locomotive for Epoch IV
Their striking construction makes the class E 94 locomotives some of the most well-known electric locomotives in Germany. The sound construction proved that speeds of 100 km/h could also be reached using axle-hung drives. The hourly output of the E 94 totalled an impressive 3,240 kW; the starting output was even 3,900 kW. The locomotive was disrespectfully nicknamed the “Eisenschwein” (Iron pig) at the DR after the war.
