For a long time, the steam locomotives of the 38 series with their riveted tenders and Witte smoke deflectors were a familiar sight on German branch lines. There they mostly hauled passenger trains and were therefore irreplaceable in local transport for a long time. Only the increasing modernization of the German Federal Railways led to their replacement in the form of diesel and electric locomotives.
