When the SBB and the NS conceived a strategy for the rolling stock that should meet the TEE agreements and at the same time ensure a comfortable passenger transportation, they decided to produce five diesel-electric multiple units together. The trains consisted of a powerhead, two intermediate cars, including a half-dining car, and a non-powered control cab coach. The SBB designated the trains as RAm 501 and 502, however, the NS designated them as DE 1001 to 1003. All five trains were stationed in Zurich. The trains reached a maximum speed of 140 km / h. The trains painted with the characteristic red and beige TEE colours, followed a mutually coordinated five-day timetable. The train crossed five countries such as Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
