In order to replace the steam locomotives in shunting service, which were proving costly in terms of money and personnel, the Austrian Federal Railways procured a series of 400 hp diesel locomotives of the class 2062 from 1958 onwards. The Jenbacher Werke in Tyrol built a total of 65 of these little twin-axle diesel locomotives until 1966.
With their striking, cast-iron front shields which served as ballast weights, this locomotive was operated in shunting and work train service across the whole of Austria. These locomotives could also be found hauling passenger trains with one to two coaches on Lower Austrian branch lines. The last engines were retired from normal service in 2003. However, some are still in use today as factory and work train locomotives under the class designation X262.
