After 12 pre-series machines, the series vehicles were delivered from 1971 by the companies Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei and MaK in four slightly different series. The machines, which can reach speeds of 140 km/h and have up to 2,800 hp, are used in both passenger and freight train service. The 218 series has gone through a number of color variants over time. The first 218s were delivered in the usual color scheme for diesel locomotives: purple red. From 1975 onwards, the colours ocean blue/beige determined the external appearance of the locomotives.
