Rack railway electric locomotive (similar to series E 69) of the Sonnblick Railway.

Rack and pinion railways exude a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountain scenery and daring routes, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The train moves forward by engaging a gear in a rack in the middle of the track, as the usual friction between wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In rack and pinion railways of the so-called mixed system, in which friction sections alternate with rack and pinion sections depending on the gradient conditions, the tractive force is exerted by one and the same machine. In the Alps you will find a particularly large number of private cog railways, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
