From 1976, the National French Railways procured a total of 237 BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotives for use on the French direct-current network. The design of these locomotives, with their so-called “nez cassé” (broken nose), was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Several of these locomotives featured special buffers for hauling "Talgo III RD" trains, which were capable of changing tracks. The buffer bodies on these engines were painted red.
