The class 2143 locomotives were built from 1964 to 1977 and were used on non-electrified main and branch lines, especially in eastern Austria. They were used to pull both passenger and freight trains. A total of 77 locomotives were delivered to ÖBB by the Simmering-Graz-Pauker works. The previously fir green 2143.07 left the main workshop in St. Pölten on 19 December 1975 after a partial refurbishment with new blood-orange paint.
